Jade Totem Pole
|
|
Totem Pole, approx. 2" (h) x .75 (w). These items unique hand made items, so color will vary. This item only available in green nephrite jade.
Jade was declared the
Alaska’s state gem in 1968. Alaska has large deposits of the gem - even an entire mountain of jade on the
Seward Peninsula! Most
Alaska jade is found in the
Jade
Mountains near Kobuk and Shungnak, in northwest
Alaska 150 or so miles east of Kotzebue. Jade is a generic term used for two different stones: nephrite, the ancient jade of China used in rituals and adornment for some 9,000 years, and for jadeite, imported into China from Burma in the last 250 years.
Alaska jade is nephrite and typically green in color.
Jade comes in shades of green, brown, black, yellow, white and red, but only a quarter of the mined jade is considered gem quality and used in jewelry
